Where Is Spring?

 Good morning, Chics! How are you handling this weather? Is it cold where you live? Our weather is all over the place and I'm tired of it. Just a few weeks ago I was outside in a tank top for two days in a row. I got an amazing tan. And then we were right back to temperatures that dipped into the 20s at times. 

We've got several things in the works for this week. The weather seems to be ready to level out. But first! Yesterday our big puppies turned one year old. They are such great dogs. Here's a picture of the dogs patiently waiting on the birthday cake.

Tomorrow I plan to get some things planted including: potatoes, onions, asparagus, and greens. My husband got sand for our coops yesterday so we can hopefully move the babies into their new coop today or tomorrow. This weekend we will do a full cleanout of the big coop. We picked out paint colors and I'm realizing I need to add "paint the new coop" to my to-do list.

My husband decided we need to fence off part of the backyard area where the dogs play. Before we get that fencing up I will till the area because we have a few trees to plant and I'll be planting a small chicken garden there as well. Here are some pictures of the areas we'll be planting in as well as a picture of the new chicken coop before it's painted.


My husband is editing a video for YouTube showing the small coop build. Once he gets that out I'll share it with you all. I told him he should share the build plans as well. He and my son build things to last. Our oldest son is great with his hands as well. God sure blessed me with handymen in my life.

There are not enough hours in the day sometimes. Do y'all ever feel that way? We've had so much going on that I haven't had a moment to even think about this blog. But today it's chilly out and I'm under my electric blanket so I figure it is a good time to catch up.  The babies are now fully integrated with the old flock and everyone is getting along great. We did have a mishap that caused injury to one of our hens though. My daughter was taking snacks into the chicken yard when Henrietta decided it would be a great time to go for a stroll in the yard with four of our dogs. The puppy declined to participate but the other three tore her up pretty well before we could finally save her. The flock was picking on her so now she is recuperating alone in the new chicken coop. To Fodder or Not to Fodder

Good morning, Chics! We've had some great weather lately. The gardens are growing quickly and the chickens have started laying again. Maybe it's the rain or maybe it's because we went back to feeding them dry food. Whatever the case, we're happy.  I thought I would share about fodder today. Late last summer my husband decided he was going to grow fodder for the chickens over the winter. Maybe you are asking the same question I did, "What in the world is fodder??" I received a lengthy answer.  Here's the definition given by www.attainable-sustainable.net: "Fodder is a mat of sprouted seeds that can be used to feed a variety of livestock and small animals, including chickens."  Sounds simple enough. Water some seeds and give the chickens the sprouts, right? Well, yes, but there was a lot more to consider. First, we needed some trays to grow the sprouts. The Babies Arrived Healthy!!

Good morning, Chics! A little after 7a.m. I received a call from the post office letting me know it was time to pick up the baby chicks. I love walking into the post office and hearing those sweet chirps! We welcomed them to Oklahoma in below-freezing weather. I'm pretty sure they were laughing at us because it's probably far colder in Wisconsin.  They were very animated on the way home and so ready to get out of that little box. All fifteen female chicks were taken out one by one and looked over for any obvious signs of distress or illness. I put their little beaks in the water to teach them to drink and let them down into their new home.  We will do very little with them for the first twenty-four hours because the little babies were just born on Wednesday, stuck into a box, and mailed to a new home; that's enough stress for a few days!
